High Definition Radio: Is it a scam?

My answer is for the US: Yes it’s basically true. It’s also technical and difficult to explain. I’ve been in radio a long time and my eyes glaze over when an engineer tries to explain it to me. But I’ll give it a go, if you promise not to hold it against me if I don’t […]

My answer is for the US:

Yes it’s basically true. It’s also technical and difficult to explain. I’ve been in radio a long time and my eyes glaze over when an engineer tries to explain it to me. But I’ll give it a go, if you promise not to hold it against me if I don’t get it exactly right.

Every frequency is a certain width (for our purposes). The main channel that a station uses does not use all of the width available to them, so there are “sub channels” or “side channels” that are there, but mostly unused by the station.

By using those extra channels on their same frequency, they can offer different programming without infringing on someone else’s channel.

So, let’s say your favorite station is at 99.5 and they play Metal. The station might actually have the rights to the frequencies between 99.45 - 99.65 and could use its side channels to play Country at 99.55 or Hip-Hop at 99.57 (again this is for our un-technical purposes).

But you do need a special radio to pick up the side channels. These side channels are also programmed to be of better quality than regular old radio and stereo, so there is also that benefit.

Hope that helps, wrote it myself, didn’t use Wiki ;

which team started the three stars awarded at the end of hockey games?

It wasn’t really a team who started it. Here’s the lowdown from the CBC site on hockey gimmicks:

When Imperial Oil joined Hockey Night in Canada as its principal sponsor in 1936-37, one of the traditions it established on the program was the post-game ritual of choosing the three stars of the game.

After the featured game ended, the three stars would be announced and each player would skate out onto the ice separately to receive applause — or boos, depending on where the game was played.

Though the custom initially started as a way for Imperial to promote its “Three Star” brand of gasoline, it was also a way for the NHL to get recognition for its best ambassadors, players like Maurice “The Rocket” Richard of the Canadiens and Johnny Bower of the Maple Leafs.

When Imperial Oil left HNIC as a sponsor in 1976, the tradition of choosing the three stars remained.

Choosing the three stars of the game is not exclusive to HNIC, however. Just about every level of hockey has adopted the format as a way to recognize the best players on the ice in games and tournaments.

One famous “Three Star” selection was on March 23, 1944, when Maurice Richard named the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 stars after scoring all five goals in the Canadiens 5-1 playoff win over the Maple Leafs.

Have you heard of the New York City Ballet Workout? Any dancer’s workout will be a killer and very good for you to get in shape but this one is supposed to be particularly good.

I’ve not tried it yet, am starting tomorrow, but know people who do it regularly and they feel wonderful, have lost some weight, toned up and their gait is much more graceful than it was before - grace requires strength.

Do an actual dancer’s workout/warmup and I think you’ll get more than DVDs that have you dancing all over the house. You may find some good dancer’s workouts on DVDs but they won’t have you doing choreography and using steps (at least they shouldn’t) they’re more stationary like Yoga mixed with Pilates and using your own body weight against gravity…you’ll sweat and get toned really well. I used to dance every day - was in a prof dance program - and it was the warm up that was the real killer not the choreography.

Your body does need good cardio strength, too, so don’t neglect that…walking is fine but walking up and down some hills is better.

Good luck and have fun!!

Is there any way of finding out if I have diabetes without going to the doctor?

Yes. I diagnosed myself, then got myself to a doctor. You go to Wallmart, or some drug store, and you can buy a diabetic blood sugar tester and then the strips that go with it. You also need a lancing device to prick your finger with. Most of the units that tell how much sugar is in the blood have a lancing device in them too. You put the stick in the monitor, prick your finger, put the blood on the right place on the stick and up comes your sugar number in about 5 seconds.

Follow directions carefully. Wash hands before testing. Test before you eat in the morning, then two hours after lunch, then two hours after dinner for five or more days in a row. You’ll have a good sampling then from which to tell how your body is handling your sugars. Take these numbers to the doctor if they are too high - take your entire monitor in. It will be valuable in helping him decide the fastest way to treat you.

You are smart to get this information and fast. Diabetes damages all your organs and you don’t want to let it continue. Best of luck!

It is different in each state. In CA, there are a few determining factors with regards to capitol gains:
For the home to be considered your primary residence, you have to have lived in it for at 2 out of the last 5 years. If this is the case, then as a single person, you are exempt from capitol gains of up to $250,000 of profit and $500,000 for a married couple. If you have not lived in the house for at least two years, then you must transfer the funds to another property via a 1031 exchange in order to avoid paying taxes and finish out the 2 years in the new home. If you have lived in the home for at least 1 year, but less than 2 years, you will only have to pay short term capitol gains, which is half of the tax penalty.

My girl turned 8 mo today. I’ve been using a schedule that combines what the doctor told me to do and what my daughter wants to do. Times aren’t set in stone….

7 am breastmilk (and nap)
10:30 breastmilk then cereal and fruit
noon breastmilk (and nap)
2:30pm breastmilk then cereal and veggies
4pm breastmilk and short nap
630pm breastmilk and cereal
830pm breastmilk and formula (4-6 oz as desired)
she sleeps through the night.

My doctor recommends feeding her 5 times a day, but because of milk supply issues, my daughter likes to nurse every couple hours. I want to keep the number of bottles to a minimum. How often you feed your child will depend on him or her. The cereal feedings are prescribed for morning, noon and evening. You could try giving those at roughly the same time every day, at a time when you know your child is usually hungry. If they want to nurse like half an hour before that you can either feed them early or try to get them to wait. it’s your call. Because of digestive issues, my girl is not allowed to start meat yet, so I guess they can go at the evening meal. I know the dr also said that she can have juice and teething toast at the noonish meal. hope this helps =)

For ultrasound, search for “diagnostic medical sonographer” and your state. There is one program in NH and 3 in MA. Do not waste your time or money on an u/s program which is not accredited. After completion of a non-accredited program, you cannot take your registry exam, until you have worked in the field of ultrasound for a full year. Most facilities will not hire you in this capacity unless you are licensed.

.I would say its.most likely that the fuel that was left in the carb has dried up and gummed up the float so that it stays up and doesnt let any more fuel in…you can take out the spark plug and take a look at it .. i think its a 10mm plug socket which any decent socket set should have…also if the bike still has its original toolroll you will find the included box spanner will do the job quite well..take a look at the spark plug when you have it out…if there is fuel getting in there you will smell it on the plug..if the plug is wet with petrol youve flooded it…(dry the plug off and put it back in), if you have no smell of petrol on the plug, you could try using some easystart to get the engine running…once its running,it will usually sort itself out then and save you having to strip and clean the carb (not a difficult job but lots of fiddly screws) these little hondas are tough but they have their own little peculiarities…next time you lay it up a long length of time switch the fuel tap to off and run the engine until it exhausts all the fuel in the carb.

That would be quite a leap for someone who was so concerned about the democratic party regaining the White House. Early on in her campaign, she seemed to be all about the party. Now she seems to be all about herself. I’m one of those who feels that her continuing to campaign at this late date is doing some damage to the dems. Not a lot of damage, but it seems noticeable.
If she were to go independent, or to a third party, I think those who still believe in her would probably see her true motivation; making history for herself. I think she’s less concerned about the Democrats than she is about her place in the history books, and I don’t think she’s as concerned about the benefit of the country as she is her own political career.
If she bails on the party, she will stand revealed. It will be very interesting indeed, to see how this all unfolds.

Hi Angel,

No, the mind is not separate from the body; they work together.

Our Central Nervous System begins in our mind (brain), travels down our spine, and branches out to every part of the body. If we damage the mind, the body becomes damaged also. If we put our hand in fire, we feel pain because our body sends signals to the brain.

If you want to talk about the mind in a psychological sense, people who become severely depressed emotionally, often feel physical effects in their bodies, such as loss of appetite, muscle aches, fatigue.

In reverse, people who suffer bodily damage such as the loss of a limb, for example, often have personality changes, such as depression, anger, etc.

Stress on the mind can cause many illnesses in the body, such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, even cancer.

The body & mind are one. They work together, and one feels the effects of the other.
